The Collegiate Gateway team is excited to share the latest updates from the re-launch of The Common App for the 2024-2025 application year.

The Common Application is the leading application platform for freshman and transfer college admissions in the US and is accepted by over 1,100 member institutions. The Common App organization continues to grow with more than 20 new members this year, including Montana State University, the Air Force Academy, and the University of Hong Kong.

Changes to the Common App in recent years have been focused on improving access and equity to the college application process, and this year is no different. Jenny Rickard, President & CEO of The Common App said, “As we focus on closing our equity gap in low- and middle-income students accessing postsecondary opportunities, we continue to grow our diverse membership so that students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to pursue their college aspirations.”

Fraud Policy

Largely in response to the widespread use of artificial intelligence (AI) – particularly when it comes to students using programs like ChatGPT to write their essays – the Common App has updated its fraud policy to more clearly define what constitutes as fraud. Some examples of fraudulent actions include:

  • Submitting essays that are not your own work
  • Misrepresenting as your own the substantive content or output of artificial intelligence
  • Misrepresenting your background or qualifications
  • Submitting false transcripts
  • Submitting false test scores
  • Impersonating counselors or recommenders

If you are found to have violated the fraud policy, your account will be suspended and/or terminated, and the schools listed in your “My Colleges” list on the Common App site will be notified of the violation.

If you are tempted to plagiarize your essays (whether by using AI or asking someone else to write them for you), keep in mind that these essays are a chance to make an impression on admissions counselors and convey your unique personality. An essay written by someone else (including – and especially – an AI algorithm) is a missed opportunity to express who you are and demonstrate your sincere interest in the school.

To put it simply, if you submit an AI-generated essay, not only are you risking the chance of expulsion from the Common App, but it is likely that the admissions team will receive any number of similar essays from other students using the same AI tool, and you will have forfeited the chance to set yourself apart and prove why you are deserving of acceptance. An essay written in your voice will always be more interesting and memorable than an essay written by AI!

Sections Redesigned for Clarity

The financial aid tab of the Common App was revamped to make it more user-friendly and highlight scholarship opportunities.

In addition, the college info pages received updates to improve the organization and readability of content, including deadline information.
